A good mattress will support your baby’s growing bones as well as making bedtime cosy. When buying a baby bed mattress, remember that your baby might be sleeping on this for up to 3 years, so take in to consideration comfort, cost and convenience. It might be easier to remove the mattress when changing baby’s linen.

You can choose either an innerspring mattress or a foam mattress.

An innerspring mattress usually keeps its shape longer than the foam mattress. When purchasing an innerspring mattress, looking for one with at least 150 coils is a good idea.

The foam mattresses are often preferred because of their lightweight. This is due to the fact that they are made from either polyester or polyether. What is most important when purchasing the foam mattress is the density of the mattress and not necessarily the thickness of the mattress. Foam pads are usually cheaper than the innerspring mattresses.

When purchasing your mattress, you should not be able to fit two fingers between the mattress and the side of the crib. This means the mattress is too small. If your baby falls between the side of the crib and the mattress, he could suffocate. Ensure that the mattress has lots of vent holes, this allows odours to escape leaving you with a fresher smell. A mattress with double or triple-laminated ticking reinforced with nylon will be resistant to water and more resistant to tears. Make sure the mattress is firm to the touch around the edges and in the centre.
