Acne during pregnancy is quite a common occurrence. If you think about the rise in your hormone levels, you shouldn’t really be surprised to learn that pregnancy acne is not that rare. If you already suffer from adult acne, your acne might become a little worse during your pregnancy. Remember that the acne might not be confined to your face. It can be present on other parts of your body too. You can consult with a dermatologist who should be able to improve the situation for you. Usually acne that appears during pregnancy will resolve itself after a few months. Using over-the-counter acne medications is not recommended, the same way that any other medication (especially when you are pregnant) should not be taken unless prescribed to you by your doctor.
Melasma or the “mask of pregnancy” is another skin condition associated with pregnancy. Melasma is caused by hormonal irregularities during pregnancy. This condition is more common in women with a darker complexion. You will find that areas on the face will become discoloured, mainly the forehead, nose and upper lip will be affected. It can look like these areas are slightly tanned. This condition does not usually occur in the first trimester. It is usually in the second and third trimester of a woman’s pregnancy. A good suggestion is to wear sunscreen everyday. There is no other treatment necessary. If you
think that it is severe and if you are concerned, you should visit your health care professional or dermatologist. Your skin should gradually improve once your baby has been born.
Unfortunately there is yet another condition you might be prone to, especially during your third trimester. Puerperal urticaria of pregnancy or PUP is a skin condition that results in hives and rashes and leaves your skin feeling very itchy. Calamine lotion is usually a sufficient relief, but your doctor may prescribe an anti-histamine in rare cases.
You will want your skin to look as radiant and beautiful as possible regardless if you are suffering from any of these skin conditions during your pregnancy or not. There are a few things you can do to help you achieve this. Make sure that you keep your face and neck clean at all times. You can ensure this by using a cleanser daily and then a moisturiser. You should be using a sunscreen daily, whether you think it is needed or not. Your skin is more sensitive when you are pregnant. Drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep is also essential in maintaining a glowing skin. Facials are really good for getting the blood flowing. Don’t touch your pimples, this will only spread the bacteria causing more pimples. Picking your pimples can leave scars, so whatever you do, do not touch them! Daily exercise will stimulate circulation to all parts of your body, including your skin. So do something as simple as going for a thirty minute walk each day.
