Keeping bath time safe

When you have a baby or small children you need to ensure that they are safe at all times. A bathroom can be a dangerous place for a baby or small child so bathtub baby proofing is very important.

Firstly, you should never leave your child unattended in the bathroom – NEVER! Clear all cabinets of cleaning products, medicines or anything toxic that little wandering hands might find. To ensure that your child does not lock themselves in the bathroom by accident, leave a towel hanging over the top of the bathroom door. This will ensure that the door does not close completely. When you are in the bathroom with your baby, keep a cordless telephone with you. So many people will react to the telephone ringing and leave their child in the bathroom ‘just for a minute’. This is so dangerous. Having a cordless telephone with you will ensure that you won’t be leaving the bathroom for this reason. If you don’t have a cordless phone, you should take the phone off the hook when it’s bath time.

A baby’s skin is very delicate. Make sure the bath water is not hot when you put your baby in to the tub. The water should be warm to the touch only, not hot. Put rugs that cannot slip or non-slip covers on the floor to prevent your child from slipping, unless your bathroom is carpeted. Make sure any electrical outlets are covered and also that there are no electrical cords in the bathroom that could lead to electrocution. Babies and small children can easily drown in a small amount of water so be sure to have a latch on the toilet seat. If your child drops a toy in the toilet, they might reach in to get it out. It is very easy for them to fall in and drown this way. Always keep your bathroom clean. The younger your baby, the easier it is for him to get ill. If your bathroom is not clean, there can be bacteria which can cause your baby to become ill.

Try to have as few glass products in the bathroom as possible. Always go for plastic option where available. These will be much safer. There are also spout covers that you can put on the bath tub spout to protect little heads from nasty bumps. There are various styles and colours available, but it is probably better to opt for something plain that attracts as little attention as possible. You don’t want your toddler trying to pull the cover off.

Install safety latches on all bathroom cabinets. This is not only so that your toddler cannot have access to what is inside but also in case he tries to hide in there. Toddlers are adventurous and you can never tell what they might do. The most important thing to remember is to never leave a toddler or baby unsupervised.
