Telling others you're pregnant

Finding out you are pregnant can fill you with many emotions from feeling excited, scared, nervous and surprised to being completely overwhelmed. Making pregnancy announcements to friends and family are the biggest announcements you will make. You might have found out you were pregnant with your husband or partner holding your hand or he might be the first person you will break the news to. A nice way to break the news to your partner is to perhaps plan a romantic meal at home and have a half bottle of champagne. You can then tell him, while patting your tummy, that you won’t be drinking alcohol for a while. Or, if you know that he will be absolutely thrilled at the news, try waking him in the early hours of the morning and tell him that he’ll have to get used to it because...and then proceed to tell him the good news.

You will have to decide between you and your partner if you want to tell your friends and family early on in the pregnancy or if you will wait until perhaps your bump starts to show. There are advantages to both options. If you decide to let others know early on in the pregnancy, you will have plenty of support from early on. You will have help with decisions you make and advice about care providers. You’ll be able to share your joy through your entire pregnancy. You will also get help physically. If you miscarry, you will have the support to cope from all those around you.

If you decide to wait and only tell others of your news when you start to show later on in your pregnancy, it will give you ‘time to take it all in’ yourself. You won’t have to deal with advice and input from others, that you might not necessarily want. If you happen to miscarry, you won’t have to let everyone know, because they never knew you were pregnant to start with.

Each person is different, so the decision is entirely up to you. You might feel so overjoyed that you will want to scream it from the hill tops and tell the world! There is no right or wrong answer. You need to choose what is right for you. If you are reading this because you are pregnant, Congratulations!!
