Don’t wonder when can babies use blanket when sleeping, but rather find out what is the safest for your little bundle of joy. It is not recommended to use a blanket for your baby until they are at least 12 months old. This is due to the fact that before this age, if the blanket moves over your baby’s face, he will not be able to move it away. After this age, he will be stronger and be able to roll over.
When you do decide to use a blanket for your baby when he is sleeping, make sure to use a thin blanket. If you dress your baby appropriately, he will not need any more that a thin blanket. The blanket should only come as far up as the baby’s chest, under the armpits. Try tucking the blanket in at the bottom of the crib mattress, so that the baby can’t pull it up over his head. A really safe option is to use a blanket that is 100% cotton. Cotton is the only material that is breathable, thus allowing oxygen to flow through it. Too many blankets will cause your baby to overheat. Babies only need as much cover as adults.
There are alternative options if you don’t wish to use a blanket or if you feel your baby is still too small. One option is to use a blanket sleeper. This is like a sleeping bag at the bottom and has a zipper that goes up to the chin. There are holes for the baby’s arms. This really is a good item to have especially when your baby is really small.
