Could you be pregnant with twins?

The first common symptoms of twin pregnancies are not that different from a singleton pregnancy. The symptoms will however be more intense. The reason for this is that a woman carrying twins will produce more pregnancy hormones than a woman carrying one baby. Some research has shown that women carrying twins often experience extreme morning sickness.

Every pregnancy is unique, so if you are experiencing severe mood swings, extreme tiredness and bad morning sickness, it does not necessarily mean you are carrying twins. If you think your symptoms are severe, see your doctor for a consultation.

Weight gain in the first trimester is usually fairly slow, except in a twin pregnancy, where you can gain weight fairly quickly. Your doctor will be able to confirm if you are larger than the norm by measuring around your belly, your body weight and the size of your uterus. This could indicate that you are carrying twins. Many moms who have given birth to twins will tell you that they felt fetal movement early on in their pregnancy.

The most common complaint of woman carrying twins is the extreme fatigue that is experienced. Your body will feel drained carrying one baby, but even more so if you are carrying two or more. If you have never been pregnant before, you might think this fatigue is what every woman experiences, but it is more severe with carrying twins.

One way to be sure you are pregnant with twins is to have an ultrasound performed in your second trimester. Another way is if your doctor can hear two heartbeats. The double heartbeat should be able to be heard after about 12 weeks.
