When there’s a baby in the family, travelling light is a thing of the past. You will always need to be prepared with a baby. Whether you’re having a weekend away, taking baby to the sitter or just nipping down to the shops, you will need to know what to put in a diaper bag.
Firstly, carry 2 index cards in case your bag gets lost and in the case of an emergency. One of these should include your name, address and telephone number. The other should include your paediatrician’s number, a neighbours number and a contact number where either your spouse or one of the baby’s grandparents can be reached.
If your baby uses a bottle or a pacifier, make sure to have one of each. A good idea to keep the nipple clean is to keep it in a plastic bag. If your baby is on solids, include a container of baby food and baby spoon. Along with this, you should have a bib and a few cloths for burping and other messes. Plastic bags are a good idea for soiled clothes and dirty diapers.
You should have an extra pair of socks, shirt and pants for your baby and include an extra shirt for yourself. Every baby is different, so when it comes to the amount of diapers you keep in the bag, it will depend on your own child, but a good recommendation is to keep as many as one for every hour of your outing or at least four diapers in the bag at all times.
A few more items to go in the bag include a tube of diaper-rash cream, baby sunblock and hat for your baby’s fragile scalp, a toy or favourite comfort object and also a travel pack of wipes. The wipes are great, not only for cleaning babies bum after a soiled diaper, but also for yours and baby’s hands and wiping any mess that might get on your clothes. A hand sanitizer is a lightweight product that you should have in the bag for a quick clean of your hands after changing baby’s diaper.
Most diaper bags will come with a changing pad, but if your bag doesn’t, you should include one of these too. It’s a good idea to keep a digital thermometer in the diaper bag for times when your baby has a warmer head than usual. You can get a digital thermometer with a flexible tip to check your baby’s temperature rectally or under the armpit. You can also get a pacifier-based digital thermometer that gets an oral temperature reading.
Finally, include a baby blanket and a couple of bottles of water and juice. It might sound like a lot of items, but they will all fit in the bag!
