Most parents will tell you they couldn’t be with their baby’s pacifier and then say they wish they never introduced their baby to the unnecessary form of dependence. The good thing about pacifiers is that they are now recommended for help in the prevention of SIDS. Some mom’ will say the pacifier is a nuisance with breast feeding as it discouraged baby to attach. For some mothers the choice is taken away from then as some babies just wont like to suck a pacifier or find the process difficult.
A baby that spits out a pacifier when introduced to it doesn’t need to be constantly introduced to it. The benefits are that the pacifier encourages a baby to breath through his or her nose it regulates breathing it can be a comforter. The down fall of a baby that is attached to a pacifier is if you loose it in the middle of the night you will be in trouble. Pacifiers have to be kept well sterilized because of germs and infections in much the same way a feeding bottle is sterilized.
The other negative for pacifiers as any parent will testify is if your toddler or small child is used to a particular shape of pacifier
and you loose it or the mall is out of stock of the particular shaped brand you will have a tear full child and lots of sleepless nights. Dentists too are not particularly fond of pacifiers as the constant sucking motion affects the growth of baby teeth this can be seen by the shape of baby’s first teeth in the shape of a pacifier. Orthodontic pacifiers are a better choice as they have a rounded top but the bottom is slimmer.
Constant dribbling is a problem for babies with pacifiers as they can develop a rash on their chin and chest and can soak their little chests which can lead to respiratory problems. The material choice of pacifier either latex or silicone the latter is more durable and less likely to be bitten off or rip in the sterilizer.
If you know what kind of pacifier your baby prefers then you should keep a surplus of them for home, nursery, holidays and trip to the minder or baby sitter just in case. The choice of choosing a pacifier will have to be weighed against the babies weaning off of it in a few years. A good tip for weaning small children off of pacifiers is to promise to give them to Father Christmas a place under the tree, keep a spare just in case the well meaning gesture is short lived.
