There isn’t an exact set of rules to follow but there are some practical tips to aid training baby to sleep through the night. Walking, talking sitting up are all big milestone in babies and parents lives as is baby sleeping through the night. Parents of a new baby will tell you they were delighted with their baby sleeping straight through. A sleep less night will affect both mom and dad and will affect the day to day things and have parents tired and mentally exhausted during the day. It is important to encourage a good sleep pattern generally babies sleep 3 or 4 hours between feeds. The three or four hour sleep between feeds means the start of the feed to when the baby is put down to sleep.
A good sleep routine is if you baby wakes less than three times between 8pm and 6am. From three months a baby should sleep through the night from 7pm till 6 or 7am, however some babies will still wake for a 2am feed, a good tip to wean baby off of the 2am feed is to give a baby a drink of bottle boiled cooled water if baby isn’t hungry they wont want to wake for a bottle of boiled water choosing instead to sleep through. With new born babies day time and night time feeds roll into one there is no distinguishing factors between the two routines. A good idea is to try to help baby distinguish between the two by having active stimulation between day time feeds with lots of verbal communication and day light.
In training baby to sleep through the night the night time sleep pattern will have to differ dramatically from thee day. At night baby should be bathed, diaper changed with sleep suit, then quickly and quietly put baby to bed in a crib in a darkened room. This should be a stark contrast to the bright noisy daytime sleep routine. Without talking to baby just say good night and put baby to sleep reassuring baby at the same time. If baby wakes then gently pat baby on the back and say goodnight.
From about 3 months baby should be accustomed to sleeping in a crib if baby wakes is isn’t good idea to allow baby to sleep in your arms or in a stroller. Gradually from about 7 months old a baby will get used to their new night time routine and although you’re their to reassure them baby will get to know night time is for sleep. It might take a few night of trail and error and gradually creeping out of baby’s nursery but it will be worth it in the long term when baby learns to sleep soundly and self sooth.
