Babies cry for many reasons but is it ok to let a baby cry for long periods?

New moms and dads will often ask this question is it ok to let a baby cry. There are two schools of thought one is no it is not ok babies especially small or infant babies don’t cry for nothing the other is yes it does no harm to let a baby cry for a few moments. This many seem contradictory but there are no hard and fast rules if you know your baby then you will know if it is out of the ordinary for your baby to cry for nothing. Babies cry that is what they so and sometime babies will cry when they are fed clean and healthy. Once you have establishes that your precious bundle of joy is dry full and not in pain then a little cry is harmless. As you get to know your baby you will know if your baby is in pain especially as small babies cannot verbalise their upset a baby in pain will not stop crying the pitch of the cry will generally be much higher.

Also a baby in pain will generally have other symptoms such as a high temperature he or she will be cold or clammy. A quick check with a baby thermometer will determine if your baby has a high temperature. One school of thought is that a baby will cry for attention or to manipulate but a small baby doesn’t have the brain capacity to determine that if he or she cries their mom and dad will come running this however cannot be said of an older child who will be only too aware of how to manipulate their parents. An older child will have the know how when it come to manipulating parents they will know how to play on their parents soft side; therefore it is always a good idea to have a baby in a set routine from the start. Generally new parents or parents with older siblings will be rushed off their feet and won’t have time to spoil their baby too much. Children need boundaries in order to understand how far they can push things.

Babies who are fed and changed should sleep up to four hours between feeds though all babies are different some babies need less sleep than others. It is common to hear if parents who will say they haven’t slept for more than a couple of hours each night for a year or more. Each baby is different you could have a baby that sleeps a straight eight hours and a baby that has enough sleep after two or four hours. If you have eliminated all the reasons for you baby crying and have been given medical advice to establish that their are no underlying medical problems then your baby could just be a baby who cries. It is impossible to listen to your precious bundle of joy crying without wanting to rush to see what the matter is. Experience will guide you and you will soon get your baby into a routine that is good or both baby and parents.

Babies generally don’t cry for no reason the rule of thumb is to let the baby cry for five minuets or so. Generally is your baby is jus t clearing their lungs then the crying should stop momentarily. You should be aware of the guideline of S.I.D.S sudden infant death syndrome which are practical rules such as not over heating the nursery not putting babies to sleep on their tummy back to back is their motto, making sure that babies feet touch the end of the crib or bassinette, not allowing babies under 6 months to sleep with a pillow not co-sleeping, not smoking during pregnancy or around the baby, small infants shouldn’t be covered with blankets passed their chest also bumper pads shouldn’t be used. Baby monitors are a good idea these allow you to listen out for baby when you’re not in the room. The question is it ok to let a baby to cry is best answered by the parents after all they are better equipped than anybody else to answer that question.
